Deborah brings those teaching skills to her lessons with her students. Some who have gone on to join bands at the music school. Next Avenue did a wonderful article on Deborah and her late husband (also an opera singer) during COVID. You can read that article here. Mary-Alexandra Onstad: Teaches Voice & Piano

Mary is a versatile performer, dedicated teacher, and passionate arts programmer. With a lifelong love of music, she grew up singing in choirs and jazz ensembles, playing piano and violin, performing in musicals and various theater productions, and playing in pit orchestras. Her love for teaching began during a vocal pedagogy class in college—and she’s been inspiring students ever since.

Her lessons focus on building a strong foundation in technique and musicality, while tailoring instruction to each student’s goals. Depending on age and interest, she integrates a range of disciplines into her teaching, including stage presence, audition preparation, ear training, music theory, and even singing while accompanying oneself on piano.

Outside the studio, Mary-Alexandra is an active performer throughout the New England area, appearing in a variety of musical settings and genres. She is always seeking new ways to create art and share the transformative power of music.

Her current playlist reflects her eclectic taste, featuring artists from Sara Bareilles, Jason Robert Brown, Puccini, Mozart, Rufus Wainwright, Ben Folds, and The King’s Singers.

What Age Can My Child Start Lessons?

Our singing teachers usually like to start students a little later around 8 years of age, BUT, we do know there are younger students who absolutely love singing. For our younger students ages 6-7, we usually do a mixture of singing along with piano training. Since we cannot really deep dive into true vocal technique with students until hey are older, we focus on learning general music skills along with singing.
